Happy Year of the Ox!!

Hi brothers,
First of all, Happy Lunar New Yr! To add another dimension to the blog plus I have nothing to do at home, I decided to post our "fortune of the year..

Since most of us are born in the year of the dog. Below is my translation of fortune for the year of the ox for specifically 1982 year Dogs.

Money Fortune: Money can't seem to stay at your hands or wallets, this may be due to your lack of sense of money management.

Career: Your career path for this year will be smooth, especially for those who wish to start their own biz.

Romance: Gals will have a lot of choices in terms of partners and romances aka 桃花﹔Guys must be wary of losing money due to romance (色); there is danger of couples breaking up.

吉祥物﹕Guys and gals can wear a piece of Obsidian glass in order to promote their Love luck. Should also do charity work such as donating blood in further improve your luck in this Ox year!

Anyway, the above prediction was adapted from a book that I have.. for your enjoyment and reference.. HUAT AH!!

Cheers!
Ice

Where is the Match Report?

After reading Papasoh blog, i have nothing but praise for him. Its juicy and entertaining, much much better to reading FHM. I know people always say i like to 'Zua' people, BUT I DUN GIVE A DAMN!

WHERE IS THE 'JUICY' REPORT AS PROMISED! You know we are civilised people, we dun really like to raise our voice, so lets talk about this peacefully. Some 27 yr old guy which i dun want to name, promised to his teammates he is going to write what super long juicy match report....but after 3 weeks....where the hell is it? Did u see it? I dun seriously. His promises sounds like Mark Hughes promising to bring Kaka to Man City. BULSHITS....absolutely.

But hor....wat can we do? He breaks rules but dun want to get punished, ill-discipline but expect people to be punctual at 830 for match, kanna shoot by paintballs on the legs cry like baby....sigh.
I am not supposed to divulge this person identity, so pls dun ask me who he is and pls dun speculate around the team.

Last but not least.....some paparazzi shots for u all. (from unknown sources)

Guy: I like the smell of your hair

Girl: U make me blush again

Team - Personnel write up

GK/Striker/Att. Mid/Def. Mid(Papasoh) - World class goalkeeper!Decent Striker. Unproven Att./Def. Mid.... Unbelievable versatile player who can play almost anywhere on the pitch but have preference for "lazy positions" such as GK and Striker.Rumours has it that he turned down Man City's 750,000 pounds per week wages. Thats why they can now afford Kaka! His strengths are handling, shot stopping and fucking good reflexes. However, he is prone to the occasional errors such as letting the ball slipped past under his "big" body and misjudgement of long shots! Outside the penalty box, he is known for his short bursts of runs (lasting approx. 5 secs) and his vision and link-up play, packs a powerful header too! Has occasional tendency to execute bicycle-kicks ...that missed the ball!!! Lacks stamina and pace! So far there is no other member(s) in the team that can even match 40% his GK abilities(much to his dismay) and thus he is an indispensable member(actually only one GK la) of the GK department! Currently on the downward trend in terms of skills and ability due to the fact that there is no challenge(boring..yawns!), too much fast food and of course the fact that he is contemplating retirement due to old age and injuries. It has been noted that he jumps 2 metres less nowadays vis-a-vis his hey days! {Special Move(s): Professional Time-wasting / Deadly Overhead(bicycle) kicks}

DR/DL(Lusty Seng) - Cultured right back! Proven at the left back position as well. It is significant to note that Man U's scout has published a report submitted to Sir Alex that noted Lusty Seng to have the potential to be as good as or better than Gary Neville. Why Lusty?? well, that's for another report not suitable in this team Personnel write up.....Anyway, Seng must have been the team's most capped DR. He possesses an undying determination to improve his game and this is what makes him so valuable to the team. His constant improvement to the game's knowledge and in gamesmanship(such as tickling opponents's balls , poking their arses and cheating referees) have contributed greatly to the team. Somehow he has the tendency to have lapses of concentration during matches (now you know why he is called lusty...the night b4 ...you know....:)??) and sometimes appears lost in thoughts. However, the good thing is he also have short bursts of fires when he dribbles all the way into opponent's penalty box and test their keeper's reflexes. So in all he's quite balanced a player who carries out his duties faithfully. Currently on the up-trend in terms of skills and ability. Certainly one to look out for in the near future! {Special Move: Cheating more than 1m when taking throw-ins}

DL(Thief Jie) - Triangle plate left back! Just out of Melwood's training academy and so dun expect too much from the "youngster". Has shown great potential in his matches so far although his number 1 ability still lies in plundering, thats why he's Thief Jie. His strength lies in his ability to clear balls at impossible angles, sometimes putting sepak takraw players to shame! Recently, he is modelling after Delap's long throw but somehow he still cannot get his footwork right thus the foul throws. His lack of tactical awareness is in fact a bonus to the team because in his anxiety, he tends to clear the ball using the "anywhere will do mentality". This in fact has contributed to numerous important clearances that diffuses dangerous situations and allow the team to re-group. Lacks pace but makes up for it by keeping opponents by his side like his girlfriend - close marking. It has been noted that opponents sometimes still turn around and check if he is still around, long after the match have ended!!! Overall, he is a fair player who has recently gave up his multi-billion badminton career and join us in the games. Currently on the up-trend in terms of ability and skills. {Special Move: Sepak Takraw styled clearances}

DC/Striker (C-cup Chao) - World class centre back! Unproven Striker! Chao must have been one of the team's longest serving DC after his professional playing career....in front of his computer!! Rejected offer of contract from Raddy Abrahamovic cos he thinks he'll rather play computer games than waste time playing for Singapore. His experience plus game reading ability in the position can be seen in the nonchalant way (just another day what!!) he carries out his duties. Strong and hard tackling style and seldom loses out in physical battles (cos of his additional C-cups???!!!) Has recently perfected the art of "Howitzer 88mm" clearances to the delight of fans and teammates alike. Not only does these clearances relieve the pressure on the defence, it has resulted in numerous defence-turned-attack situations! Also known as a good header of the ball.Solid, no nonsense defender who seldom makes mistakes but lacks a bit of pace and has been noted to be slowing down due to rapid intake of oily and meaty stuffs. Recently debuted as striker and have managed to create a strong physical presence in oppositions penalty box - by putting 3/4 ball of his C-cup!!! Overall, he is an important 1st team player, also rumoured to be the "dai to lau da" of the DOTA gang. Currently noted to be on a bit of a downwards trend in terms of ability and skills (need to cut down on fatty diets!!). {Special Move: 2-step powerful goalkicks/freekicks}

DC/ML(Quick Feet Kenny) - World Class centre-back! Competent left midfielder! Another long time central defender besides C-cup. Fans and teammates are in awe of his speed he changes pace and his recovery. Often the man to clean up the backside of his partner in crime, C-cup, with whom he has had great understanding with(perhaps forged by the countless hours of DOTA gaming, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning before match day??). Also rejected the invite to join in national team training because his buddy needs a DOTA partner online!! He just knows when C-cup will lose out to opposition's striker and will appear out of nowhere to "sweep" up any mess! A hard-tackling right-footed player who has an equally strong left foot. A consistent performer who seldoms have any errors thats why he's voted the players' player of the year. Maybe sometimes you can see a bit of over confidence when he mis-kicks or when he totally fluffed his simple clearance. Has played on the left side of midfield with ease but lacks confidence to take on opponents and bring the ball to the by-line. Also known for his predatory instincts in attacking corners, seems to know where the ball will be. Has scored a few goals due to this positive attribute of his game. Strong header of the ball who seldoms loses out in 50-50 headers. Perhaps he can try to be more assertive,by hooking the ball into the air and play papasoh some backpass with his head, in dangerous back facing strikers situations.Has established himself as an important 1st team player. {Special Move: Lightning speed burst and recovery}

DMC/DC(Wayang Quan) - World class defensive midfielder! Rusty centre back! Has held the DC position in his younger days but was promoted to the Def.Mid position for his ability to read the game and snuff out defence-splitting passes. Protects his back four superbly with his no nonsense tackling and presence in the air. Has the abilty to bring down the biggest of opponents with his body charge and winning 50-50 situations with his "lan-pa" spreading "ka wei" (chop positioning) stun. Also provides defence splitting passes(a few times only) with his vision and assist in the strikers built up to goal. Used to be packed with pace and stamina and was one of the sprinters in the squad but currently unable to complete his 2.4km IPPT run within 45 mins!! Was dropped by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts(NAFA) for poor results in Theatrical Studies and thus decided to bring his "talents" to the pitch.Recently, paparazzi photographers have noted that he frequents the house of Golden Horse Award winner Tony Leong Chao Wei for personal one-to-one closed door sessions of acting(wayang) lessons. However, he certainly did not live up to his mentor's name and reputation by displaying disappointing acts of falling to the ground with the slightest contact(sometimes no contact but can be seen flying 5 metres in mid-air!!) Often, referees have no choice but to blow the whistle to stop the game.....to laugh....before regaining composure and carrying on with the game. Another point to note is his recent tendency to grab his leg and fall to the ground...no...this time not wayang....but real....CRAMPS!!!! An important first team player nevertheless whose importance is often overlooked. Currently on the down trend in skills and ability and makes more mistakes nowadays!! {Special Move: "Diving" with an incredibly audible 'arrrggghhhh' that can be heard two blocks away but earning the team free kicks in the process!!}

MC/Att.Mid/DC/Manager (Capt Sparrow) - World class midfielder! Proven Att.Mid, Incompetent DC, P-plate Manager(zonal reputation). Capt has played in various central positions but the midfielder role seems to be his best position to date. In his younger days, he plays as a DC but currently is suspect with his ability as a DC due to old age and his beer belly( Raising up his hand and calling for offsides seems to be part of his game when playing as a DC now!) An all round player, he has the stamina to join in the attack and drop back to defend when necessary( mostly for 65 mins of the game only!). Has the ability to spread play to the wings with his vison and produce one-touch defence splitting passes. Occasionally, when fired up, will lead by example by running around and closing down opponents in a bid to win back possession. Has the knack of scoring long range shots by hitting the ball first time. Notable technique and ball control skills. However, he tends to fade away as the match wears on and you can almost always find him within the centre circle after the 70th min of the game. Likes to intimidate the referees for the team and have tendency to hack down opponents in pursuit of personal vengence - at the expense of the team!! Has poor team management skills and likes to tinkle with the squad (like the one Rafa Benitez he supports), especially after our team has just taken the lead or are holding on to slim advantagous positions. Has a poor concept of time - often ask substitutes to warm up and get ready in 5 mins but bring them on 25 mins later!!! A highly over-rated player whose absence is of minimal disruptions to the team(we won most of the matches when he's not around haha!!) Currently on the down trend in skills and ability due largely to frequent clubbing, alcohol abuse and expanding beer belly. Totally in sync with rich,spoilt and arrogant, well-paid footballers whose after training and match hours are spent at clubs and bars and in the company of high class social escorts! Paparazzi have spotted him in the vicinity of Changi Village's 'bapok' square in search of new and novel ideas of fun, after he declared that he feels numb in the presence of beautiful escorts in last month's Playboy interview!! { Special Move(s): Accurate first-time long shots! / defence splitting killer balls / Flapping at the ball!!}

Att.Mid/MC (Alam Alvin) - Tireless midfielder! Alam is held in high regards for his tireless work in midfield. His covering of the grounds during matches far exceeds what Dirk Kuyt did at Liverpool. He is a reliable midfield player who seldom makes mistakes and can be depended upon when the team needs him. Before his injury and subsequent operation, he is known for his mazy runs and head-turning dribbles but this has been toned down after his operation. Currently plays in the hole behind the striker and has a knack for scoring first time or long range shots. Maybe his only weakness is his inability to provide aerial threat in the attacking third (but thats not really his fault!!) Alam still has the ability to open up the opposition with his accurate passes and vision and the occasional direct run at opponent's defence. Does not have any real weakness to note.Takes over the captaincy whenever Sparrow is on leave and has done a fine job so far. Likes to dribble from left to right in search of teammates and often looks for the killer pass. Has good technique on the ball and reads the game well. Alam is a consistent performer who seldom have off days which is why he is well-liked by team mates and fans alike. {Special Move (s) : Pin-point passing / Direct run at oppositions' defence}

Att Mid RLC (Jackie Chan a.k.a Rooney) - Cultured Attacking Midfielder who is adept at playing across the midfield from left to right. He is the team's main supplier in terms of crosses and cross field pass. Rooney has the ability to spot spaces behind the defenders and make accurate through passes. Has a good technique on the ball and likes to take on defenders to the by line before letting loose his crooses into the box. He is also the main man who is responsible for the team's direct free-kicks. Has scored many goals from such situations although it must be noted that this has been decreasing with age! He is also in charge of taking the corner kicks of the team for he can really whipped in the ball and cause problems for the oppositions' players. Overall, he is a talented player that is valuable to the team. However, he is also notorious for his short-temper and his knack for "screwing" opponents who tries too hard to stop him in his dribbles. Likes to give a very "pissed off" face and yells at over zealous opponents....sometimes at the Ref too!! He is the only player to be sent off in the team's history for petulance towards the referee. Recently, after being too close with Wayang Quan, he has picked up the habit of going to ground with an audible "arghhh" but showed a bit more convincing power by shouting angrily at the opponents. Referee are mostly taken in by his yelling for they think he is really hurt by those tackles. {Special Move(s) : Deadly free-kicks / Cross field passes / Arguing with referees and opponents!!}

.......unfinished article.... will update when have time later....

Let's spice up the blog!

Hey guys! I just got Merv to add me again into the admin side of things and so now i have my 'blogging' rights back!

Come on man!! This is OUR blog! Lets put in some effort to keep it alive and juicy yeah? maybe 'seafood' can be served here instead?? hahahaaha!!!

Anyway, I do hope all of you guys settle the admin log in part of things and start to post in here either with new blogs or in the comments section. Its so boring over the past few months or maybe a year since Merv went overseas... there have been efforts by other parties but i'll say its everybody's business to contribute...not just those who are good in IT or whatever....Let's put in some effort. I know its quite a chore to blog, cos my own blog on fishing is practically dead now...haha...but my point is it is really whether we want to or not la...what no time/busy/no passwords/language no good...hmmm....are excuses!(myself included). I am sure you can find some time when you are not so busy, settle the password issue and blog in any style you want(as long as it can be understood)

So dun give yourself anymore excuses, everyone must play their part ok! If someone delays their match report, then everyone will conveniently delay theirs too...cos it will be taken as the norm...its a vicious cycle!!

Next

Maybe I'll just add on that I think we can "loosen up" the blog a bit...like spewing some vulgarities la, updating on some rumours la, whose getting laid la , some paparazzi reports la etc etc....

I know there are other people reading our blog due to some links here and there BUT...I feel since this is OUR blog, we should do it OUR way!!....the way we talk to each other in reality.... That'll give our blog its own unique taste and attraction and bring us closer in this internet realm!! Currently I feel its too "politically correct" with strict match reports and official matters such as trips admin issues!! So boring....We have known each other for so long liao, i think we can accept each other's "shooting" and 'suaning' right??....for example, Capt sparrow knows I dun mean it when i say (tongue in cheek)that he's a fat ass midfielder who cannot run and always try to cover up by shouting instructions and analysing other people's weaknesses! Right Cappy?? hahahahaha

Maybe Tiger Yan can add in some paparazzi shots (those voyeur types)?? Or Chao can add in some interesting multimedia applications?? But most importantly, its vital that those who dun have a tendency or have never posted b4, to start doing so now!!

In short.......loosen up guys,start blogging, start bragging and start toking cork!! right here!!

Cheers!!
PapaSoh

P.S cappy....you know i really mean it right? wahahahahaha

Match Summary
Sorry for the late report guys. The writer behind the scene was actually a out of job discourage worker who is so bored with life that he could not focus on the “task” of spicing up the Blog. Anyway things are done eventually and we shall look at the last competitive match before we go on a fun match and our Chinese New Year.
SongBo Fc records a rare clean Sheet
Clean sheet are hard to come by for Songbo Fc despite having one of the best defensive centre pairing in the west side of local footballers. But on the return leg of the match-up against the uncles (real uncles ) in fact some could actually be your parent’s childhood friends, SB won 3-0. In fact the score could actually be much bigger if not for some wasteful finishing and over confidence by the strikers and a particular winger. In the first leg which was played at fuhua sec SB lost 2-1 to a late goal by Botak whom had a relatively good scoring record against SB. In the wake of the 2-1 defeat SB FC started the match cautiously at Hua Yi Sec. Their morale were boasted when Uncle FC star player Angmo was not in the team bus for the match. But to the surprise of everyone SB star striker was not in the starting line up too. It seems like benitez is tinkering with the squad again. Only eight starters who had started that 1st leg retained their position. In usual fashion SB packed the centre with only KTV king up as a lone striker. Despite the fact that he actually started the last match as a lone striker it is open to all he is not one out and out striker, his strengths in the game which is his energy level and direct style of taking on players one V.S one is not fully utilized. But for once instance his work rate pay off, a relatively harmless ball was place down the right corner flag. KTV king chase the ball and won it off a defender, under pressure he send in a cross over to the near post. The GK put out his right hand in an attempt to parry the cross out but to the disgust of the uncles GK best efforts was to palm in into his own net! What on earth was he actually thinking about? It was later found out by paparazzi that the night before KTV king and the Gk actually had a late night out playing a different ball game. Even after the lucky break the match fails to sparkle. Passes from both sides would astray. Everyone seems to be waiting for the halftime whistle to come. In between the goal and the start whistle it is noted that SB tanker(sulk) went down with an ankle injury and was sub with sparrow. It is believe that his ankles cannot support his body weight at this alarming rate he is growing.
Finally the whistle came. Benitez seems to use more effort talking and motivating SB than on pitch. He noted that the midfielders are taking far too much time on the ball always trying hard to get the prefect ball for the KTV king. The game plan is simple get the ball down the line and KTV king would do his part in chasing the ball down. We are not liverfool’s Simi Alonso or Steven Jialet. We are just SB FC a weekend team. Watching too much EPL is killing us. Just do things the SB way keep organize and play the ball down the line any set piece or mistakes from the opponent would be enough to kill the game off.
The whistle goes off SB march into the pitch with the usual Huat rally. Kelvin comes on for thief and Jeremy for Cap Tan. In a tactical reshuffle Jeremy (goal machine) moves up to the lone striker which our KTV King moves to the left and Jackie Chan to the right. But the second half starts off in the same fashion as the first half. The match is all in midfield as both teams based more on organization than individual skills. But it took a moment of magic to actually alter the score line. Lamps lay a ball back to wayang who in turn played a defense splitting pass which even Simi Alonso would be proud off to set KTV King down the left side . KTV did what was required of him when he put in a left foot 1st time cross into the danger zone. Goal machine who was so starve of service that when something so delicious come in how could he not take? He finished the move with a well place header to corner of the net. Great football by SB FC! All it takes is 4 touches from center midfield to the left line into the net. That has to be a contender for the goal of season for such a build-up.
After the goal SB with their heads up play much better. But to the limitations of the players as usual they could not put more than 8 passes together. But that did not deter SB to score a 3rd goal. This time round jackie played a ball into the area for machine to put into the net. How many times have we actually seen this combination work? Countless! The two seems to have a great understanding on the pitch. Mervin came on for KTV king soon after as KTV King seems running out of steam after a good and efficient performance. Wayang went down with cramps with 10 mins to go. It seems quite long he haven been down on cramps when in the past he could actually go down on cramps for 4-5 straight matches. It was rumored that he was not at home the previous night. Cap tan came on for wayang. 5 Sec made a decent save at his goal line (the reporter did not see) which he proclaim to be great. But what is new everything that 5 sec does is always a top drawer (self proclaimed). With the time running down SB still got time to actually get a prefect chance to increase the tally. Jackie set on a 50 m run beating 2 players in the process. When he closes in on goal he send a powerful cross for machine to head towards goal but machine could not get a clean contact on the ball. The finish went off target but to the amazement of everyone the 2 of them exchanging high five after that play as if they scored a goal. But credit should given to Jackie that near the end of the game he could still embark on a fifty m run which spells a lot of his stamina. When the final whistle sounds SB celebrated they managed to get a win over an opponent which just beat them a week back. It was a good and efficient effort by SB FC.

Match 94 - Lost

Date : 11-Jan-09
Venue : Fuhua SS.
Jersy : Red

Score FT : 1 - 2 (Rujia)
Score HT : 0 - 0

Match Summary
First of all, I would like to apologise for the late match report here. I was being ‘volunteered’ by our captain to write this match report as to ‘lead by example’ and he himself will write the first report. Hence, without much motivation(cos I was assigned to write a lost match report) and lack of time, I only managed to start typing this at the eve of ‘deadline’ before I would be fined 10 bucks.
Before writing on the actual match report, I would like to give a bit of the writer’s background.
O level English - C6
A level English - D7
Uni – Computer Engineer
Hence, do pardon me for my broken English for my match report and it would be slightly different from other writers.

This was one of the few matches which Songbo team can learn the most from it. Just a few highlights on the match:
• it’s also our first defeat in the year 2009.
• This wasn't the first time we were playing against our opponent and we had quite a good record against them.
• Our up-and-coming striker was late for match, hence was being benched for more than 1 half.
• Many of the players are not playing to their standard, and vice-captain was one of the most obvious one.
• Didn’t manage to keep on to our lead and allow opponent to score 2 goals in last 10 mins due to
o Not enough time wasting being deployed.
o Substitution of 2 players or more are made when we were leading.
o Fatigue showing at the end of the match, hence not enough closing in on our opponents. (first goal)
o Didn’t manage to stop the ball from crossing into the danger zone after a pass from a free kick. (second goal)
• For attack wise, not much chances are created for our forwards. As Jiaxiang is still new to the forward position, he tends to drift off in terms of positioning, hence couldn’t pose much threat to our opponent’s goalpost.

To move on as a team, we have to work on the above mistakes that were being made during the match. And I guess we did improve cos we managed to win them again the next week after this match was being played! Haha.. Hopefully this match will stay with us in our memory to remind ourselves from making the same mistakes again.
Cheers and KONG XI FA CAI! HUAT AH brothers!!

Match 93 - Win

Date : 04-Jan-09
Venue : Kent Ridge SS.
Jersy : Black

Score FT : 4 - 2 (Jeremy[Rujia], Jackie, Jackie, Jeremy)
Score HT : 3 - 1

Starting Lineup
GK. : Junbing
Def. (L-R) : H.Weijie[Kelvin], Kenny, Suichao, Kaiseng

Match Summary
Season of 2009 got underway!!!!

The first match for the 2009 season kicked off at Kent Ridge Secondary School where the field was more squar-ish than rectangular and a drop kick can land straight in the penalty area.

The opposing team was recently just formed and it comprises a couple of teammates of Sybian’s former club. Zhi Yuan, who has rendered good service to the short-handed Songbo over the years, helped to arrange the match.
Songbo came into the match in high spirits, both on and off the pitch, as we have carried off an unbeaten streak from 2008 and the team just had their inaugural AGM the night before.

The team started off with the tried-and-tested formation of PapaSoh in goal; Huang, Chaoz, Seafood Ken and Lusty across the backfour; Jack, Quan, Lam, Sparrow and Sybian forming the engine room and Jeremy as the lone striker. CapiTan’s season got off to an inauspicious start as he discovered his boots were missing in the morning and had to visit Mustafa to get a replacement.

As usual, the match started off cautiously as both teams took some time to settle into their paces and analyze each other’s style of play. It was very apparent that Songbo FC were very much still in their holiday partying mood as they appeared sluggish and not focused on the day’s proceedings. A few uncharacteristic hesitant defending from the normally solid pairing of Chaoz and Seafood Ken put Songbo under some early pressure. On the back of receiving the Player of the Year award the night before, Seafood Ken was probably still thinking of what awards he should aim for in 2009.

The organization and systematic approach of Songbo FC soon ensued and they dominated the early proceeding and could have put the team up at least two to three goals. The main culprits were the usually lethal Jeremy and Jackie who skied a few one-on-one situations and scored a few rugby tries. Then, totally against the run of play and aided by some hesitant defending, the opponent took an early lead. Songbo defence failure to clear the ball resulted in their striker being put through and he slotted the ball for the opener. 0-1 against Songbo!

At least the goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call for Songbo as they started to react to the incessant barking of Sparrow on the pitch. In one move, receiving the ball from the midfield, Sparrow played a through ball to Jeremy and he finally made the chances count and opened his already impressive account for 2009. 1-1.

Finally, Songbo appeared to get rid of all the good food from the steamboat the night before and started playing to their potential. Noting the opponent’s lack of organization due to the recent forming, Songbo grew in confidence and was hungry to take a halftime lead into the dressing room. Jackie, who had been misfiring throughout the first half, found himself free on the right edge of the penalty area with a loose ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot to the top right corner of the goal. The ball went right through the side netting and initially the referee (who seriously needed a pair of spectacles) blew for goalkick. Upon hassling from players from Songbo and the obvious lack of argument from the opponents, the blushing and still-not-yet-woken-up referee blew for a goal. 2-1!

Songbo did not wait too long for the third goal to come as a foul near the penalty area resulted in a direct freekick. As per usual, top-scorer Jackie stepped up, oblivious to the hungry-for-a-freekick-chance looks of his teammates, and planted the ball neatly into the centre of the goal. His goal celebration was one of arrogance and cockiness as he kissed his two fingers, firmly reminding the team that he has a two-goal lead at the top of the goal-scoring charts. 3-1!

Soon after, the halftime whistle was blown and the teams trooped back to their ‘dressing room’. The steamboat food was just about digesting within some of the players and some were still figuring out who were the hunter and guru were some of the reasons cited for the lacklustre performance. The halftime message for Songbo was clear: The team was there for the taking, take our chances and finish the match off. Kelvin came on for Huang at the break as CapiTan waited on the bench eagerly to test out his new boots.

The second half started like how the first half ended as Songbo stamped their authority and dictated the proceedings. A few half chances were created; notably Sparrow looking to break his duck with a diving header and Jeremy rounding the goalkeeper but placing the ball onto the oncoming defender on the goalline. However, Songbo finally made their chances count when a great clearance from the defence turned it into an immediate counter-attack and throughball. Jeremy, burst through with his well-endowed speed and close control, and finished the neat move with a good shot to the corner of the goal. 4-1 and Songbo appeared to in cruise control!

Lalalala.. and Songbo reverted back to its holiday mood, seemingly assuming that the match is well and truly over when its not even three quarters over! Showboating, misplaced passes, individual glory, Rio-Ferdinand defending and complacent finishing were displayed by Songbo following the fourth goal and some went back to guessing who was the hunter and guru for the game the night before. It wasn’t long before Songbo finished digging their own graves and firmly buried themselves inside as some hesitant defending allowed the opposing striker to nick in and scored the second goal. 4-2!

In these friendly matches, a two-goal lead is as fragile as glass and Songbo probably know this loud and clear and they have surrendered a coupled of two-goal leads over the last season. The anxiety and nervous-ness soon appeared and this translated into their play as they were put under intense pressure by the opponents. However, the pressure all came to naught as Heaven was kind to Songbo and let them off in this opening match of the season.

All in all, Songbo should have finished the opponents off way before halftime given the numerous chances they had. Instead, they let the opponents in with a sniff of chances here and there and on other days, they might have been punished severely. Let’s hope that this serves as a good wake-up call for the team in this opener and prevent Songbo in slipping into party mood during the course of the year!
Nevertheless, a good win to start the year and let’s strive for greater achievements for both the team and individual performance in this coming year!

Cheers!

Looking Ahead:

Each member of the team will rotate to write match reports. Commitee members will be given lesser reports to write due to commitments.

Stats like Starting Line-Up, Substitutes and Assists will be tracked to give a better picture of individual as well as team performance. It could prove useful when selecting the next Player of the Year.

A fund will now be kept by the treasurer for purposes like prizes, food expenses and the like. To obtain this amount, members will pay an N+$2 where N equals the amount to pay for the match. Absentees is still obligated to pay the $2. (yes? no?)

That concludes our 2009 New Year Party cum AGM. We hoped everyone had enjoyed the event and we look forward to the next one. Until then, huat ah!

P.P.S. Please feel free to add in anything that I might have missed. Thanks. Yan, if you can, spice up with some photos where appropriate.
