Match 30 - Abandoned Due to Rain

Price of a glass of Bandung: $0.80

Price of a White Chicken Rice Set with Vegetables: $3.50

Price of valuable lessons in soccer: Priceless

It is true that there are some things that cannot be bought with money. What was supposed to be an exciting away game today turned out to be our 1st match to be abandoned in 30 matches.
The day did not get off to a good start with 3 sets of teams waiting to play on the proposed field of our away game. After much debate and arguments, fate was sealed by a toss of a coin. Sometimes, losing a coin toss just means you do not get to kick off or do not get to play on the side of the field we like. For today, we learn that a coin toss can mean 45 mins of waiting on the sidelines.

Lesson 1: Never propose a coin toss if you cannot make heads and tails out of the situation.

It was late morning when the match got underway. The beating sun signalled what many thought would be another hot and sweaty game. As part of the negotiations, we agreed to play our 1st half for 30 mins and the time was kept by the next teams to be played. What ensued was a scrappy game of football on the pitch; both teams missing chances that would have broken the deadlock. 30 mins went by very quickly as we were told that we have a last attack before the half ended; too quickly in fact. As we dragged ourselves off the field, we took a look at our unofficial timekeeper. Total mins played: 27.

Lesson 2: Never let your opponents time the game for you, they always seem to be wearing a broken watch.

Another 40+ mins of waiting and more frustration builded within the team. Our opponents were practicing their ball skills on the pitch itself, which deemed too much for Gattuso Yan. He remarked it as "disrespectful" to the teams that were playing and promptly ticked off the offenders. As the time slowly ticked by, Songbo FC was beginning to feel restless and bored. Mindless chatting was all they could do. When the half finally ended, the first team was to resume their game; 40 additional minutes of waiting. At that moment, Captain Sparrow made his team talk. He decided on a tactical switch of taking off Ronaldo7 for Looney. As the teams took to the field, so did the clouds. What was a sunny morning began to turn into a potentially long shower.

Lesson 3:
Never substitute Ronaldo7 if you want a good weather; he has never played in the rain.

As the game got underway, more clouds started to form and sure enough, light drizzle started to fall. Both Songbo FC and our opponents moved to a sheltered spot to protect our belongings. However, the drizzle started to turn into heavy rain and both teams have members scrambling to seek shelter under the void decks. Some of remaining members stood under trees to announce their presence in case the awaiting team jumped the queue on the field. Under the void decks, a sudden decision was made to head for the nearby coffeeshop for a quick meal. Many agreed as many have not eaten breakfast. It was also time for lunch and many were famished (around 12pm by the way). So the group under the void deck headed to the coffeeshop and the match status hanged in limbo; most were not sure whether the game would continue but the decision to go for a meal had seemed to signal the inevitable.

Arriving at the coffeeshop, most of the members expressed their hunger by ordering double sets of meat, set meals and additional dishes. However, one guy sat quietly as he could not satisfy his hunger; Gattuso Yan was still hungry for the match. He made his unsatisfaction known to Captain Sparrow, who then decided that we would continue the match after the meal as the rain has subsided. Those who ordered extra gobbled down their meal as there was not much time left before we have to leave for the field. Alas, we were too late. The awaiting team has already taken to the field and our opponents had some members who had already left. The ambiguity of the status of the match in addition to the long moments of waiting made almost everyone lost interest in finishing the game.

Lesson 4: Never leave a match at half-time to order what you will eat after full-time. If you can, don't eat at all unless it is very clear that the match is indeed, cancelled.

As members finished their meals, those who were initially waiting under the trees join the team. At this point, Gattuso Yan voiced out his feelings to the rest of the team. "As a team, we should have respected the game. We should not have taken off our boots midway through even if it was raining. Neither should we have went to enjoy a meal, which attributed to some of the opponents leaving, thinking that the decision was to abandon the match." A rough extract of what Gattuso Yan said, with some censorship on the vulgarities. In the end, everyone felt that today was a new experience for the team; unplanned delays, poor organisation and wasted fuel with only 27 mins of soccer to speak of. Captain Sparrow hopes for the team to learn from each and every experience; both the good and the bad ones. Songbo FC will take these lessons seriously and learn from them.

Final Lesson: Do not leave your car windows down, even if you think it will not rain.

Away Game...

After weeks of rest, Songbo FC will be set to play tomorrow, in an away game. Normally, matches will be played at their familiar home ground at "Ann-Tee U". But in order to expose the team to "overseas" experiences, tomorrow's match will be played in an away game. A rumored starting lineup has been leaked to the internet. The back 4 will include, Thief Huang, Speedy Ken, Laser-Eye Hui and Attached Kai. PC Lam, Gym Club, Captain Sparrow and Ronaldo7 will form the Midfield. The Strike force will consist of Looney and Leggy Kel.

Chaos put up a good performance in the last match, but was left out due to unforeseen circumstances.

This is what he have to say. "Our capt. wants me to have a good rest as he wants to try out a new partnership in defense. I'm alright with it. A rest will be a great thing for me now. As you all know, I starting playing for this team in midfield. Since then, people started calling me Bullocks. Of course, I was honored to be given the name. After that, when i was shifted to defence, they change my name and started calling me Tarry or Canna. Whether i deserved the name or not, I'm not sure. But as long as i give my 100% to the team, I'll be very contented with anything else. But still, i wish i could to try out the Striker role. I can feel my legs shouting out to me that they want goals! Well, since i was given names while playing in defense and midfield, why not striker?"

So, the only changes made are Chaos and Laser-Eye. We can expect a good match tomorrow, and let us all wish Songbo FC the best.

P.S: So, what do chaos expect his name calling to be, if he is to be fitted into the striker role? "Ronildo", he claimed... Haha, we'll see, we'll see.

Happy Birthday Huang Weijie!

We had a great time and a great dinner as we celebrated Huang Weijie's 24th birthday at Bukit Batok "twin" Kopitiam. Total of 12 SongBo members arrived for the feast which was sponsored by the birthday boy.

After which, we rekindled old memories of LAN Gaming by popping into a heartland LAN Shop which turned out to be Tanjong Pagar FC's club house. After much work, we finally got connected and fragged the night away on CounterStrike.

Once again, SongBo would like to wish Huang Weijie a Happy 24th Birthday!

Welcome, SongBo Members

As our Songbo team starts to fall in inside the blog, I would like to clarify some things up front first. By joining in as a member, you cannot create a new post. Up to this point, only team captain Rujia and I are able to create posts. I might delegate postings of match report to others in future in the event that I am not able to attend certain matches. As a member, you can leave comments on each posts. Talk cock, sing songs and let your feelings be known.

Next is a small request. Once you are registered, please change your display name to your real name so we know who you are, as not everyone knows you as Candyman0 or Captain Sparrow.(Latest update: I think it is ok to use your nick...after all, this is the Internet. So ignore what I said about nicknames and use your real name only if you feel comfortable with it.)

Anyway, after this post will be a statistics report so far up to the last match. That post will probably be the highly anticipated one...but that will be for tomorrow. :D

Enjoy the blog bros and let me know what you think in the comments.

Match 29 - Win

Ok guys, this is the first post for our Blog. I think a Blog will be suitable for posting our exploits on the field for each match. Therefore, I will post match reports here as well as full statistics that I have for the team. Please check back to this page for the latest happenings for SongBo FC.

Match Report - Match 29 (Lineup: Junbing, Kaiseng, Kenny, Suichao, Huang Weijie, Sybian, Yanshou, Rujia, Jackie, Alvin Cai, Kelvin. Subs: Mervin, Aaron)

The match started brightly with the skies looking a little cloudy but the pitch was good and the players were lively. I arrived just in time to hear the starting whistle go off from the referee. Our opponents were a team we lost not long ago; 2 games ago in fact, with a scoreline of 3-4. This game promised to be a game full of goals it seemed again. However, the opponent didn't have the abundance of substitutions they had the last time round.

Gears were slow to click in the beginning, as both sides squandered chances and mistakes were commited by both sides. As the game progressed, SongBo FC clearly had the upper hand as chances went begging after some good buildup by the team. However, it was rewarded when Jackie had a good strike from a free kick just outside of the area and buried it at the back of the net. 1-0 SongBo FC.

It was then rain clouds started to form and without warning, precipitation started to fall from the sky. With the drizzle, players started showing signs of misinterpretion of passes, miscontrol of passes and the occasional slips on the pitch. It was this condition that allowed SongBo FC to score their second goal. After some good work by Jackie down the right flank, he whipped in a low cross which evaded everyone except Rujia, who took it on his right to secure a 2 goal cushion before the break.

By the time the half time whistle had gone, the drizzle had turned into a pour. Both sides were relieved to hear the whistle to take a break from the torrid weather. The half time talk from SongBo FC captain Rujia had a strong and distinct message; go in hard for the ball, go for the kill. Making 1 switch which saw Mervin replacing H.Weijie to take up his usual position on the right flank, SongBo FC headed into the 2nd half with a purpose.

Thankfully, the rain had been weathered down to a mere light drizzle. The pitch, however, was still in a bad aftermath caused by the rain. Both teams were unfazed as they both still had a part to play in the match. Any hopes of getting back in the game were dashed for the opponents as Kelvin was there to poach the 3rd goal when a shot deflected by the keeper came his way. From that range, he made no mistake for his 3rd goal in 5 games.

As the lead was stretched, Rujia commanded the team to slow down the pace and to play more intelligently. Mervin, fresh from the bench, had other ideas as he wandered forward time and time again. It proved fruitful as he took a well placed shot to the keeper's right to make the score 4-0.

The opponents' spirits were down after suffering from a 4 goal deficit but SongBo FC's captain had no intention to play the nice guy. Exploiting the space the opponent gave him in the middle of the park, he went on to plough 2 more goals; 1 with a well taken shot that would have beaten any keeper, and another strike which had to be attributed to luck when the keeper failed to catch hold of it to allow Rujia to complete his hat trick. With 4 goals in his last 2 games, it is certainly hard to imagine Rujia once had a 15 game goal drought.

The game could have ended 7-0 or 8-0 as Junbing saw a good header came off the post and Alvin squandering a couple of chances. It was all smiles for the team which celebrated a clean sheet and their biggest win since an identical 6-0 scoreline which came last year on Match 19. A good showing from the team that only lost once in their last 10 games, but not one that they could not improve on, especially in certain areas of defence and attack.

To sum it all up, to quote the Man-of-the-Match today, don't mess with a guy who has fallen out of love.

Score Summary: 6 - 0 (Jackie x 1; Rujia x 3; Kelvin x 1; Mervin x 1) HT: 2-0
