I was looking at myself in the mirror today, in my "triangle shorts", and I was not very happy with what I saw - rolls and rolls of fat!!
Its not very healthy, yeah i know that!! But I'm lazy to go to the gym, although i did went for a run just now...and it was quite shiok!
After the short run in the gym, I was sitting alone and smoking and I thought of how I can increase my fat-burning regime. I got the idea that running up and down the pitch on match days will be a good way! However, I know my limits and that I will never be able to last a full match as an out-field player. It will be wasted if I were to give my all in one half and slack around in the other half and deprive others of a chance on the pitch.
As such, I have thought of a plan.....
I will start every match in the GK position. Then I'll like a half as an out-field player.
Although I know that I am so good that nobody is half as good as me (hahahaha), I do need the exercise and of course a bit of fun. In addition, we are getting old so I hope that i can enjoy the game like the rest of you do before i succumb to injuries or old age.So how do we do it?
I suggest that all take turns to be the deputy GK every week - not only senior members who sometimes help me out when I wanna have a run. This will then be fair to everyone. While i understand that some of you are clueless about handling or shot stopping, I believe that at our level of soccer, we do not need a good GK. We need only a strong defence in front of the GK and basic handling - as previous matches have shown! Even if we do lose any match because of some GK errors, I believe that our team spirit and enjoyment of the game will prevail over the significance of the result.
If need to, I'll be willing to draw up the GK roster for the team!
I hope that everyone will take it in their stride when their turn comes - and not "chut special" and find excuses! If you look at it, maybe for the whole year, you'll only need to perform the duties for around 2 times (like writing the blog) or even less and for half a match only.
This is what I would like to ask for, from the team members....do consider the proposal and post your comments with regards to this matter. After which, I will put up to Sparrow if there is an agreed consensus!!
Kam Sia beri muchy!!!

Yeah PapaSoh! I fully support this decision of yours. You have give so much to the team, its time we return you back some. I believe being a GK for a half shld not be a problem for our guys as people so 'kao peh' as me dun mind doing it on a regular basis in the past, i am sure the rest of our member would be more than willing to agree to your proposal.
1 vote from Tiger Yan! =D
*Maybe we can come up with a clause in ur proposal such that you have to lose an amount of weight within 2 weeks time or wat.
I am in.. Being a goalkeeper is a different challeage from any other positions you are in... But end day i do feel dat results are important to the team as well...
I do worry for the team if the results do suddenly go downhill as teamn morale would be affected. When Tiger is back we would haf 2 decent Gk for the team which would be a better balance. For the team i do feel that roo much changes at the GK department would defintely swing the results. But things like 20-30 mins on a alternate match basis our team goes rotating should be better. It might not sounds fair to the 2 GKs but for team everyone does their part.
NOT everyone gets to play thier favourite position week in week out but for the team everyone stays there . Ask c cup if he likes center defense dat much i doubt the answer would be a clear cut yes. I do want to play as a striker week in week out but never ever had a chance after 4-5 yrs.
To sum it up my suggestion for the team and the 2 gks i do hope that this arrangement would be on a alternate week or once every 3 weeks basis.
I dun mind being GK too... but have to pardon me if I pick up the ball, put it down and pick it up again. Haha.
Thanks for the vote from tiger and commando....
I think wayang has mentioned and made some valid concerns with regards to the plan affecting results as well...
So i thought i better clarify the points...
1.) I dun mind any outfield position. dun have to be striker always..because simple mathematics will show that any out field player will have ran at least 3 times what a GK does, in any match...
2.) I will not make this a hard and fast arrangement for every match...but i am not for the idea of every alternate week or once every 3 weeks....
Think of this scenario...What if on that very alternate week, the opponents turn out to be very very strong?? Then wouldn't it be suicidal to carry on changing GK, since the planned week says so??
So i do not agree that it is done on a scheduled basis...
Instead, I will assess the goalkeeping threat from a GK position in the first half...If its something like our last match, that it's so boring that the GK can shave and brush teeth, then I see no danger of carrying out this plan for results will not be affected greatly!
On the other hand, if opponents are fucking strong like the 10 malay guys we played against and got thrashed, do you think I will still want to relinquish my post as GK? I dun think so...because in the face of strong oppositions, I think it will be more challenging for me to stay in between the posts, thats one..and of course, in such matches, i can understand and justify the team's need for a better Gk to stand between the posts....
3.)Lastly, I would like to clarify that I think favourite positions and the GK position are two different issues altogether....... unless we have at least 3 volunteer members who say one of their favourite position is GK! Then, we'll not have any issues to begin with.....
Being a GK like wayang has said, is a different challenge altogether... In fact, its actually inversely related to outfield players, the more outfield players enjoys their game and gets good results, the less the GK enjoys the match....Conversely, the lesser the outfield players enjoy the game due to intense pressure, the more busy the Gk will be and of course, gets more involved in the game.....
I think the term "for the team" is overrated here...If I and my fellow deputies have for the past 10 years or less, adhere to the motto of "for the team", then i do not think it is too much to ask if each and every member contributes one or two outings for just one half...over the course of a year.
I think that the term should mean that everyone contributes instead of just the few always contributing...
This I feel is really the "for the team" statement at its apogee!
Just my thoughts....lets see what others view on this is....thanks for those who have replied so far.....:)
No problem commando!! In fact I am sure you now have learnt a lesson in Goalkeeping, after that incident. haha!!
Now you know you can bounce the ball but cannot drop it, and pick it up again right?? haha!
Hmm...
I don't know about the rest but for me personally, I have to say rotation policy is a good idea. However, if you ask me to be a GK I don't think I would agree with that idea.
Firstly, it won't benefit the team as most of us have 0 GK experience/knowledge. Furthermore, it won't benefit me as I play in midfield almost all the time and while it does improve my understanding on the difficulties of being a GK, it does not improve my area of play significantly. And changing GKs midgame can be very dangerous...like what Papa said, what if our opponents turn the tables on us after swapping GKs?
Thus, I propose a refined idea; have a rotation policy for all positions. The Captain should draft out a list of our players and he should judge what positions these player can play in. Of course, the players must at least be able to play in that position competently. For example, assigning me to CB would be suicidal. I think at the very least, each of us can play in 2 positions. Ideally, it should be a different position (Right Mid and Left Mid are not considered different positions I guess...only a different side).
We have played a few matches using experimental positions and we have done well thus far. From my personal assessment, our team have matured well enough to put up a good fight even when we are not playing in our native positions. Therefore, I would propose my above suggestion. Comments are certainly welcome. =)
First of all, i think bin's idea shld be distinguished frm merv's idea.
While merv's idea may be worth exploring, its does not seem to address bin's problem. So i suggest we address an issue at a time.
Having said that, i fully support papa soh's plan of assessing the opponent and decide if he wants to swap GK after the 1st half. Im sure it will widen our understanding fo the game since GK is the onli one who can see the team shape changing for the whole time.
We may benefit more than we expect and of cos.. its to help papa soh lose weight! lol
mmm.. GK.. I don't mind. But need to learn how to dive first..
LOL...
eh..merv..i think you a bit out of point liao...haha..
but i still dunno your idea..
so ur for a rotation policy but ur against being the GK personally?
Well, that sounds a bit unfair ...haha
except myself, nobody in the squad has actually any form of professional GK training so i guess it kind of puts everyone else on the same level....
To add to my proposal, I have actually thought of inviting my friend whom I know is reliable GK, but what will this mean?? This will mean that there will be an additional player to the squad and thus less one place per week....Wich means because of the GK position, someone has to play less every week....Which i feel i dun want to do so....
I would rather we do it amongst our team for it will not increase competition for places but just occasional swaps....
Let's wait for further comments from other team mates before i come up with a summary...haha...thanks for the replies!!
Depends on opponents and on the judgement by bin, if he feels that they are of no threat, its ok to change and let other ppl have a feel of being at gk..but at least that person playing gk must have a rough idea of what to do...
Actually, I never read the whole thing and posted. That's why a bit out of point. But I guess it's also good for the Captain to rotate our guys from time to time. Maybe you can start as an outfield player in a position suitable for you and let a player who can play as GK be the GK. Our team now only has 1 competent keeper and that's worrying if you cannot make it. It's time to train up another...or, Yanshou could make an early return. Haha.
I support Bin's idea of rotating the GK.
It is a thankless but integral job in the game of footie.
Like Captain has always said, GK 'lao giu' everyone scolds. But it's otherwise for the attackers.
However, I'll like to propose that not all to be rotated to fill in between the sticks. Maybe we should ask around for volunteers to who can be a goalie. And I shall volunteer myself here.
I've played goalie before and I only stopped when i fractured my right arm in Sec 3. But it should be ok now.
In any case, I think I've played in almost all positions for the team except GK.
Which brings me to the next point. Each member should have a portfolio of positions they can play. Maybe total 2-3 will be good. If don't have, then train for it. Versatility and adaptability are virtues.
Sorry for the lengthy essay. :P
Cheers.
Like what Kelvin and I have said before, I think having a profile for each player with their positions will be good. I was toying with the idea of having a "Captain's Report" so that he could, at one look, see details of our players (Something like the Team Sheet you see in FM games). From there, he could see things like appearances, substitutions, goals, assists, clean sheets, etc, etc.
To bring the idea of positioning further, perhaps we could all provide at least 2 positions we know we can play well in, as well as a position that you would like. In that way, Captain could from time to time play you in that position to try out. Of course, for GKs, I think we either have volunteers or Captain should pick a few backup GKs in order for Junbing to have more outfield chances.
hmmm...i see that many minds is better than one here...hahaha....kelvin has provided another aspect of the proposal....
Merv's idea of a match report for individual players also not bad is also not bad....
Anyone else haven posted?? kenny?
I was thinking of the defense problem for the rotational policy for all ppl (since that's the important part). e.g if u were to swap with me or chao in center def, both the def and gk will be compromised.
But since kelvin brought up the idea of the number of positions to play in, we could swap around without having to compromise both gk and def, which i feel is good.
